One Comment. 200 Conversations. Here’s How.

Most people scroll past a neighborhood video without a second thought. A few might like it. Fewer still share it.

But what if a single word in the comments could start a real conversation — and automatically pull someone into your world?

That’s exactly what happened when we launched a video campaign for a pedestrian underpass connectivity project in Houston’s East End. We embedded a simple call to action throughout the video: Comment “underpass” to learn more.

Two hundred comments later, here’s what actually happened behind the scenes.

The trigger

When someone comments a keyword on Facebook or Instagram, an automation built through Gear Medium detects it and fires two things simultaneously: a public reply acknowledging the comment, and a private DM with a link to a dedicated landing page. No manual monitoring. No copy-paste. It just runs.

The beauty of this mechanic is that it works with the algorithm, not against it. Every comment signals to the platform that people are engaged, which pushes the video to more feeds. The automation converts that engagement into something useful before the moment passes.

The landing page

The DM didn’t just drop a link. It sent people to a page built specifically for this campaign with an interactive map, a pre-filled email to city council representatives, and a sign-up form that captured their phone number and opted them into SMS updates.

Every person who signed up got a welcome text within seconds. Every sign-up also triggered a notification to us and the East End District stakeholder, so the right people knew in real time that someone new had raised their hand.

What this actually builds

Views are vanity. Comments are slightly less vanity. But a phone number from someone who typed a keyword, clicked a link, and signed up for updates? That’s a contact who wants to hear from you.

Within 24 hours, the video had crossed 10,000 views. More importantly, it had started building a list of real people connected to a real place — tagged, segmented, and ready for the next update.
